In the United States, HP makes most of its laptops at its plant in America's largest laptop manufacturing city: Greensboro NC. Roughly 75% of the laptops sold in the U.S come from this location. It is located on the edge of downtown Greensboro about 2 miles from the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.

In 2008, HP announced that it would invest $300 million and add 300 positions in its largest U.S. laptop manufacturing facility in response to demand for its products during the economic downturn that began in 2008. HP's plant in North Carolina makes about 50 million laptops each year and has a workforce of about 3,000 employees and 600 contractors at the plant

HP began production of laptops in a part of their existing facility in 1986 but the facility in Greensboro hadn't been created yet. The company announced the creation of the new plant in December of 1993 after receiving a $170 million economic incentives package from a joint state and local funding program created to promote economic development.

A $1.3 billion bond issue, approved by voters in 1995, was instrumental in funding this project as well as other projects throughout the state, including new community college and university campuses and public school facilities.
